Georgi Chapel in Bischofshofen

The Georgikirche is a Romanesque church in the town of Bischofshofen in the St. Johann im Pongau district in the province of Salzburg . The chapel was used from 1950 to 2006 as a memorial church for those killed in World War II and is a listed building . In honor of the fallen soldiers, a new monument with seven marble name plaques was designed on the south side of the chapel.

Georgi Church

The Georgikirche stands above the Liebfrauenkirche on a step in the west of the city. This chapel is regarded as the own church of the Lords of Pongau and was originally part of a castle or fortification. It was first mentioned in a document of indulgence from 1403.

Exterior

A retracted semicircular apse closes off the undivided rectangular nave . The building under a gable roof with a turret has arched windows. In the west, an early Gothic pointed arch portal with a grooved soffit is closed to form a round arch. Above this, in the masonry, the spoil of a Roman head bearing a miter is attached. The original entrance to the south with a Romanesque arch is walled up.

Interior

The simple hall with a flat ceiling has a walled-up portal with a round arch opening on the right. Behind the round triumphal arch is the semicircular apse. Romanesque frescoes around 1230, which were uncovered in 1950 and renovated in 2006, show God the Father and the four evangelists and the crucified Savior with the twelve apostles and Mary with the confessing church in the apse . On the choir arch, the frescoes show two prophets (Jeremias and Isaiah), including St. Georg and Margaretha. Albert Birkle (1950) created the two glass paintings on the south side on the themes of war and peace . There is a bell from 1627.

The church was renovated between 2003 and 2006.

War memorial

Opposite the Georgikirche there is also a listed monument to those who died in World War I in the cemetery entrance as a folded wall, which was designed in 1931 by the painter and sculptor Karl Reisenbichler .
