Georgy Girl is a song from the movie Georgy Girl . It was written by Tom Springfield (music) and Jim Dale (text). The song was interpreted by the Australian group The Seekers .

Content and use in the film

The song was written especially for the film. It is played in the opening credits, where it asks the question why Georgy is still alone. She should be a little more positive, dress better and do something with her hairstyle too. It is also played in the credits, where she is confirmed that she did everything right because she is now married to a millionaire. The version published on record corresponds to the version from the opening credits, but has been changed slightly.

Georgie Girls entered the UK charts on March 1, 1967 and stayed in it for 11 weeks, reaching number 3. In December 1994 they came there for another two weeks but only came in 79th place. In the US , they got on the Billboard Hot 100 on December 3, 1966 and stayed for 16 weeks. They came up to number 2. In Cashbox , a magazine that was in competition with Billboard , Georgy Girl even reached first place. In Australia , the home country of the Seekers, Georgie Girl came first, as well as in New Zealand and Canada .

Awards

Georgy Girl was at the Oscars 1967 in the category Best Song nominee, subject to there but towards the Born Free from Born Free - Queen of the wilderness . In the same year the song was also nominated for a Golden Globe in the same category , but the award went to Strangers in the Night from Willkommen, Mister B. The song was also nominated for the Laurel Award in 1967, the award went to A Time for Love of murder second hand .

Georgy Girl was the first song by an Australian group to reach top positions in the US charts. When The Seekers returned to their hometown Melbourne in March 1967 after their international success and gave a concert there in the Sidney Myer Music Bowl , an open-air stage designed for 13,000 visitors, they were welcomed by an estimated 200,000 visitors. This is still (2019) the most popular concert in the southern hemisphere. In the same year, The Seekers were named Australian of the Year ; they are the only group to have received this honor so far.

Cover versions

The Seekers were invited to the 1967 Academy Awards to perform their song. But they already had another engagement for that evening. So management decided to keep the deal - much to the disappointment of the group. Therefore, Georgy Girl was presented at the Mitzi Gaynor awards ceremony . This received an enormous amount of applause.

On April 29, 1967, the Baja Marimba Band came with a version of Georgy Girl for a week at number 98 on the US charts.

Other cover versions were sung by the composer's sister, Dusty Springfield , the lyricist Jim Dale , or the New Seekers , the successor to the Seekers. Artists such as Chet Atkins , Carol Burnett , Charlie Byrd , Ray Conniff , Percy Faith , The Lettermen , Liberace , Matt Monro , Wayne Newton , Olivia Newton-John , Nelson Riddle , The Ventures and Bobby Vinton published cover versions of Georgy Girl .

A German version of Georgy Girl with a text by Kurt Hertha was released as a single by the Cornely Singers , but was also sung by Cornelia Froboess .
