Gerald Francis Bogan (born July 27, 1894 on Mackinac Island , Michigan , † June 8, 1973 in La Jolla ) was an American Vice Admiral in the United States Navy and naval pilot. Bogan was one of the pioneers of naval aviation from aircraft carriers . During the Pacific War , he commanded the USS Saratoga (CV-3) and aircraft carrier formations in multiple battles.

Life

He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis in 1916. During the First World War he served in convoy protection between the English Channel and Gibraltar . After the war he served on destroyers . In 1925 he was trained as a naval aviator. He was one of the first pilots to land on an aircraft carrier.

As sea ​​captain, he was in command of the USS Saratoga from September 27, 1942 to April 7, 1943. He led the carrier in the Battle of Guadalcanal and the Battle of the East Solomon Islands . He was promoted to Rear Admiral in January 1944. He was given command of Carrier Division 25 , which consisted of the four escort carriers USS Fanshaw Bay (CVE-70) , USS Midway , USS White Plains (CVE-66) and USS Kalinin Bay (CVE-69) . This was followed by the command of Carrier Division 4 in Task Group 38.2., Part of the Fast Carrier Task Force . Task Group 38.2 consisted of the carriers USS Intrepid (CV-11) , USS Cabot (CVL-28) and USS Independence (CVL-22) , also included 2 battleships, 3 cruisers and 18 destroyers. He led the unit in the Battle of Tinian and very successfully in the sea ​​and air battles in the Gulf of Leyte .

From February 1946 to December 1948 he was Commander of the Marine Air Force in the Atlantic Fleet . From January 8, 1949 to February 1, 1950 he was Commander of the United States First Fleet .

He was involved in the admirals ' uprising in the late 1940s , when several high-ranking officers in the US Navy took public positions against the US government's military plans.

Although combative and ambitious, Bogan was considered an excellent pilot and first-class commander by both his superiors and subordinates.

Awards

He has been awarded numerous medals, including Navy Cross and Legion of Merit . He has received the Navy Distinguished Service Medal twice .

In 1992, Bogan was inducted into the Naval Aviation Hall of Honor .
