Antwan Tolhoek (born April 29, 1994 in Yerseke ) is a Dutch cyclist .
Athletic career
Although his father, Patrick Tolhoek , a former cyclist, trained young talented cyclists from the neighborhood, Antwan Tolhoek was initially not interested in sports, he only played tennis and football now and then. In addition to school, he worked as a gardener and in the port of his hometown of Yerseke. At the age of 15 he started speed skating under the coach Henk Angenent , who won the Elfstedentocht in 1997. He rode a bicycle for training purposes, gradually took a liking to cycling and decided to ride a bike when he was 18. His supervisors assured him that he was a good climber. In 2014 he started with the De Jonge Renners in the Tour des Pays de Savoie , drove for the first time in his life in the high mountains and had to give up the race. Subsequently, he initially doubted whether he should continue cycling.
In 2015 Tolhoek received a stagiaire contract with the UCI WorldTeam Saxo-Tinkoff : “I felt like I was in a candy store.” He started in the Arctic Race of Norway , finished twelfth in the overall ranking and won the mountain classification of the Tour de Bretagne Cycliste . He was not taken over by Saxo-Tinkoff, but got a contract with the UCI Continental Team Team Roompot , where he was looked after by Reinier Honig and Erik Breukink , among others . This season he won the mountain classification of the Tour de Suisse . After the end of 2016, as previously promised, he received a contract with Lotto NL-Jumbo .
In 2017 Tolhoek started for the first time in a major tour of the country , the Vuelta a España , and finished 27th in the overall ranking. 2018 he could with multiple stage races occupy top places in the overall standings he finished 13th of the Tour of California , Tenth of the Clásica San Sebastián and eleventh of the Criterium du Dauphine . He finished second in the one-day Japan Cup . In 2019 he and his team took second place at Hammer Limburg .
In June 2019, Antwan Tolhoek achieved his first World Tour victory when he won the sixth stage of the Tour de Suisse , a stage with a mountain finish , out of a breakaway group with 17 seconds ahead of Egan Bernal .
