Overall it is soft, with red-headed and hairy glands in the upper part. The stem leaves are opposite. Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from June to October. The flower stalks are early spreading until turned down. The hermaphrodite flowers are radially symmetrical with a double flower envelope . The hairy sepals are pointed and about 3.5 to 6 millimeters long. The light purple-colored petals are oblong-egg-shaped, undivided and with a length of about 5 to 7 millimeters, slightly longer than the sepals. The nail is bald. There are five nectaries . The whitish stamens are 2.5 millimeters long and the yellowish anthers are about 0.5 millimeters long. The scars are reddish.

The fissure has a length of about 1.6 to 1.8 centimeters with awn and stylus remnants. The fruit valves and beaks are mostly sticky-haired.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 26.

Habitus

Occurrence

Geranium rotundifolium occurs from Western Europe across the Mediterranean (for example Morocco) to the Himalayas and Siberia . Geranium rotundifolium is a neophyte in the New World . The round-leaved cranesbill is very rare in Central Europe. In Austria the round-leaved cranesbill is very rare and endangered, while in Switzerland it can be found scattered in warmer areas.

The round-leaved cranesbill is mostly rare to very rare in Germany and is often only inconsistently carried away. Only in the Upper Rhine Plain, especially in the Rhine Palatinate, does it occur more frequently.

The round-leaved cranesbill grows in weed communities in the vineyards, on walls and on paths. It thrives best on warm, more or less dry and nutrient-rich, stony- sandy loam soils . In vineyards it is a character species of the Geranio-rotundifolii-Allietum vinealis (Association Fumario-Euphorbion), but also occurs in societies of the associations Sisymbrion, Alliarion or the class Sedo-Scleranthetea.

Taxonomy

Geranium rotundifolium was first published in 1753 by Carl von Linné in Species Plantarum , 2, p. 683. The specific epithet rotundifolium means round-leaved.
