Gerard Meijer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gerardus Johannes Maria Meijer (born April 6, 1962 in Zeddam , often Gerard JM Meijer ) is a Dutch physical chemist. From 2002 to 2012 and again since 2016 he has been director at the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society.

Meijer went to high school in Doetinchem and from 1980 studied physics at Radboud University Nijmegen with a diploma in 1985. After that, he studied in 1988 in Nijmegen (and at the Max Planck Institute for Flow Research in Göttingen) with A. Dymanus and P. Andresen PhD ( UV spectroscopy of gas-phase molecules; combustion diagnostics ). As a post-doctoral student he was at the IBM Almaden Research Center in San José (California) and received a scholarship from the Dutch Academy of Sciences at the Free University of Amsterdam in 1991/92. In 1992 he became a lecturer in Nijmegen and in 1995 professor for experimental physics. From 2000 to 2003 he was director of the FOM Institute for Plasma Physics in Nieuwegein . After that he was director at the Fritz Haber Institute in Berlin until 2012. There he was director of the molecular physics department and director of the entire institute for four years. Since 2012 he has been President of the Board of Directors of Radboud University in Nijmegen and "External Scientific Member" of the Fritz Haber Institute. At the end of 2016 he will leave Radboud University and return to the Fritz Haber Institute.

He uses various laser spectroscopic methods (including cavity ring-down spectroscopy , infrared FEL (FELIX)) in molecular physics and the development of storage rings and other techniques for ultracold neutral and polar molecules in the gas phase for their spectroscopic investigation. Among other things, he examined fullerenes . In 1999, his group succeeded in effectively decelerating neutral dipolar molecules with time-varying electric fields.

He wrote around 350 scientific papers (2012).

In 2012 he received the van't Hoff Prize of the German Bunsen Society. In 2009 he received the Bourke Award from the Royal Society of Chemistry . He is a corresponding member of the Dutch Academy of Sciences and has been a full member of the Academia Europaea since 2013 . In 2010 he received an ERC Advanced Grant.

He is honorary professor at Radboud University and the Free University of Berlin.
