Gerben Tuin (* 1983 ) is a Dutch actor , director and playwright .

Life

Gerben Tuin attended the Gemeentelijk Gymnasium in Hilversum from 1995 to 2001 . From 2002 to 2010 he studied applied physics at the TU Delft . He completed his studies with an engineering degree . In the 2011/12 school year he worked as a physics teacher at Emmaus College in Rotterdam .

Tuin started acting at the age of 11. One of his first roles was Polonius in Hamlet . Tuin, who developed his acting skills and a. acquired through various workshops on Stanislavski and Shakespeare , worked from 2008, then regularly since 2010, as a theater actor in the Netherlands in several theater productions. Since 2010 he has appeared mainly in Dutch theater productions in English .

From 2010 to 2012 he was a member of the theater company "TheArte of Theater" (TAT Company). In 2010 he took on the leading role of Vincent van Gogh in the play Vincent in Brixton by Nicholas Wright in the Dutch premiere of the play in Amsterdam.

In August 2012 he became a member of the Dutch theater company "The Dutch Factory", a theater group that performed Shakespeare's texts in the original language and with elements of improvisational theater, mostly under the direction of British director Tim Carroll (English Shakespeare Company, The Northcott Theater, Shakespeare's Globe) . In April 2014 he took on the roles of Lysander and Flute in the premiere of the Shakespeare production A Midsummer Night's Dream ; in later performances he also played the roles of Oberon, Theseus, Bottom and Demetrius. With “The Dutch Factory” Tuin played Romeo in Romeo & Juliet in April 2015 ; in later performances he also took on the roles of Mercutio and Mr. Capulet. In April 2015 he appeared in a production at Shakespeare's Globe Theater in London with the Sonnett Walks ; together with actress Amber Teterissa he presented Shakespeare's sonnets in the White Hall Gardens. When Romeo & Juliet was resumed in the 2015/16 season, in a new version for six actors, Tuin alternately played Romeo and the roles of Mercutio-Capulet-Friar Laurence from September 2015.

Gerben Tuin is also a member of the Orange Tea Theater Company in Amsterdam. There he played u. a. in the plays American Midget (2011), Hertz (2012, as co-leading actor) and Borderlands (2016). In November 2016 he played the role of Kreon in Antigone at the International Theater in English (iTie) in Amsterdam.

In addition to his acting work, Tuin also emerged as a theater director and playwright. In 2013 he wrote his first play Cabaret , in Dutch , based on the film of the same name and its literary source, which he also directed at its premiere in July 2013. The piece has been shown at performances in and around Delft . He also wrote an adaptation of Enrico IV by Luigi Pirandello , which he also directed. The world premiere took place in June 2015 at the Flora Theater in Delft. He also wrote his own play Elena , which premiered in May 2016 at the Amsterdam student Tooneel Vereeniging (ASTV) “Kothurne” in 2016, and which he also directed.

Tuin also worked for film and Dutch television . He has appeared in several short films and commercials. In the 4th season of the ZDF series Heldt , which was broadcast on ZDF from September 2016, he played investigator Jan Kramer, the temporary successor of Detective Inspector Nikolas Heldt ( Kai Schumann ), in some episodes . In the 5th season of the series, he was seen again in an episode role in January 2018; As Jan Kramer, he helps solve an unsolved case in which he was involved as an undercover investigator for the drug squad.

In 2011 and 2012 he performed as a street musician at the street music festival in Leiden with the ensemble “Il duo + Uno” . Tuin, who speaks Dutch, English, German , French and Swedish in addition to his mother tongue , lives in Amsterdam.
