Gerd Burtchen

Gerd Burtchen (born October 16, 1920 in Braunschweig ; † November 16, 1959 there ) was a German caricaturist , painter and graphic artist .

life and work

As a child, Burtchen suffered a serious accident that meant that he was disabled for the rest of his life, had to use a walking stick and in later years could hardly leave his apartment. From 1936 to 1942 he studied drawing and painting at the Braunschweig School of Applied Arts, among other things. He later worked for many years as a satirical draftsman for the Braunschweiger Zeitung . Along with Peter Lufft, Burtchen was one of the most famous caricaturists in post-war Germany . He also belonged to the circle of constructivists around Walter Dexel . Some of his oil paintings are now in the Braunschweig Municipal Museum .
