Gerd Geyer (born February 23, 1956 in Schweinfurt ) is a German paleontologist and adjunct professor of palaeontology at the University of Würzburg .

life and work

Gerd Geyer studied geology and paleontology at the University of Würzburg with his doctorate in 1983 and his habilitation in 1991. 1984–2003, with interruptions, lecturer at the Institute for Paleontology at the University of Würzburg

From 1991 to 1996 he had a scholarship in the Heisenberg program of the DFG . From 1999 to 2004 he was Research Associate at the New York State Museum in Albany and from 2006 to 2010 visiting professor at the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology at Academia Sinica, from 2007 to 2013 visiting professor at the Institute of Paleobiology at Uppsala University and at the same time from 2007 to 2012 at the Bavarian office State Office for the Environment (Hof department).

He deals specifically with the Cambrian and trilobites (Cambrian trilobites from Morocco were the subject of his dissertation), but also with mollusks and other invertebrates. He also dealt with trilobites from Görlitz, the Montagne Noire , the Cambrian and trilobites in Canada, Israel, China, Sweden, Greenland, Siberia, Israel, Spain, Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, Namibia, the USA and Iran and made contributions to the revision des Treatise on Invertebrate Paleontology on Trilobites. He also deals with the Franconian triad . He is co-author of two books on the geology of the Spessart . Further work concerns the revised stratigraphy of the transition Proterozoic to Cambrian in Namibia. More than 100 scientific publications come from Geyer.

He published a number of geological guides and a book about the Würzburg Lying Stones .

Since 1990 he has been an electoral member of the International Sub-Commission on Stratigraphy of the Cambrian (1996 to 2004 as its secretary and 2004 to 2012 Vice-Chairman) and since 1991 a member of the Riphäikum-Silurian sub-commission of the German Union for Geological Sciences.

Initial descriptions ( valid )

  • First author of the Triassic mussel subgenus: Modiolus (Sanda) GEYER 1987.
  • First author of the Triassic shell species: Modiolus (Sanda) semicircularis GEYER 1987.
  • First author of the Triassic conchostraken subspecies: Euestheria minuta multicostatus GEYER 1987.

The Paleozoic mollusc order Helcionellida was first described by him. In addition, he first described around a hundred trilobite species and genera and also many other brachiopods, mollusks, insects and trace fossils.
