Gerd Heusch (born on May 20, 1955 in Bonn ) is a German doctor and physiologist , university professor and director of the Institute for Pathophysiology at the University Hospital Essen .

Life

Heusch studied medicine from 1973 to 1979 at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf and the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , where he graduated in 1979 with the state examination and in 1980 with a doctorate. med. completed. After military service as a medical officer, he was a research assistant at the Physiological Institute of the University of Düsseldorf, where he completed his habilitation in 1985 with his habilitation thesis “Sympathetic Heart Nerves and Myocardial Ischemia”. 1985/1986 he was Research Cardiologist at the University of California , San Diego with Dr. John Ross Jr. and from 1986 to 1989 Heisenberg fellow of the German Research Foundation at the Physiological Institute and in the Clinic for Cardiology (Prof. Dr. Franz Loogen) at the University of Düsseldorf. Since 1989 he has been a university professor and director of the Institute for Pathophysiology at the University Hospital Essen, interrupted by a sabbatical in 1999/2000 in the Department of Physiology at the University of South Alabama , Mobile. He declined calls to Loyola University, Chicago , Texas A&M University , College Station , and the University of South Alabama, Mobile. Heusch has been the Scientific Director of the West German Heart and Vascular Center in Essen since 2014.

Heusch was President of the European Section of the International Society for Heart Research from 2002 to 2005 and President of the German Society for Cardiology - Cardiovascular Research from 2007 to 2009 . As President of the German Society for Cardiology, Heusch was particularly committed to the establishment of chest pain units to combat heart attacks - today there are more than 250 chest pain units across Germany. From 2008 to 2016 Heusch was a review board of the German Research Foundation and from 2012 to 2016 spokesperson for the review board medicine. Since 1992 Heusch has been editor of Basic Research in Cardiology ; he was and is a member of the editorial boards of numerous renowned specialist journals, including a. Circulation Research , Circulation , Journal of the American College of Cardiology , European Heart Journal , Cardiovascular Research, and American Journal of Physiology .

Heusch is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians , London (since 2006) and a full member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts (since 2012) and spokesman for the medical specialist group there (since 2019).

research

G. Heusch's scientific interest is coronary blood flow and the pathophysiology of myocardial ischemia and reperfusion . He showed that the coronary vessels are not maximally dilated during myocardial ischemia, but are essentially subject to coronary constriction, in particular due to the alpha-adrenergic effects of the sympathetic nervous system . He described in detail the hemodynamic, morphological, metabolic and molecular basis of the hibernating myocardium and the coronary microembolization. In recent years he has analyzed the signal transduction of cardioprotection by ischemic conditioning. He attaches great importance to the translation of preclinical findings into the clinic, which he succeeded in particular for ischemic conditioning distant from the heart.

Heusch published more than 600 original and review articles in respected international journals, his h-index is three-digit.

Seven of Heusch's employees completed their habilitation, his long-time employee Rainer Schulz has been a university professor and director of the Physiological Institute at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen since 2011 , his long-time employee Bodo Levkau has been a university professor and director of the Institute for Molecular Medicine at Heinrich Heine University since 2020. University of Düsseldorf, his long-time colleague Petra Kleinbongard has been a university professor for cardioprotection at the University Hospital Essen since 2020.

Awards

Heusch received an honorary doctorate from the Medical Academy Nizhny Novgorod / Russia (2000) and an honorary professorship from the Tangshan Medical College / China (2006). He is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Physiology at the University of South Alabama, Mobile. Heusch was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon in 2012 and the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia in 2017 for his services to research into and fight against myocardial infarction.
