After relegation, he was a member of the FSV championship team in the II. Division , which would have been promoted again immediately in 1962/63, but this was not possible for the Bornheimer Hang team due to the new classification from the 1963/64 round . He then moved to VfB Stuttgart . On the first day of the new Bundesliga season , on August 24, 1963, he was in the VfB Stuttgart team, which lost 2-0 at FC Schalke 04 . In his first Bundesliga season, coach Kurt Baluses only brought him to play one more game - on November 30, 1963 against Eintracht Braunschweig. Menne's teammates Hans Eisele and Günter Seibold represented the competition on the defensive position . In the second round at VfB he made 18 appearances in the Bundesliga and also made three games in the Messe Cup against Odense BK 1913 and Dunfermline Athletic Trains. In the 1968/69 season he formed together with the newcomer Hans Mayer from SSV Ulm 1846 the main defense of VfB Stuttgart, which was ranked fifth in the table under coach Gunther Baumann . In the summer of 1969 he ended his playing career and took over his first coaching position. He played a total of 121 Bundesliga games for VfB between 1963 and 1969 and scored eight goals. From May 1970 Menne was again active as a player and played for Royal Antwerp in the 1970/71 season seventeen games in the top Belgian division. Then Menne finally ended his playing career and from then on only worked as a coach.
As a trainer
Immediately after his playing career, he took over the Stuttgart Kickers for the 1969/70 round in the Regionalliga Süd , but was replaced shortly before the end of the season by the veteran Georg Wurzer .
For the 1971/72 season he took over Eintracht Bad Kreuznach and led the team to promotion to the Regionalliga Südwest in the following season . In the 1973/74 season he finished 7th in the table with the promoted team, which was insufficient for qualifying for the newly created 2nd Bundesliga .
From October 1974 he returned to the second division and took over the coaching position at 1. FSV Mainz 05 as the successor to Uwe Klimaschefski . The team from Bruchwegstadion played in the southern group of the Second Bundesliga and finished the season in eleventh place.
In December 1975 he took over the coaching position at FC Augsburg after his replacement in Mainz . By the end of the season, FC Augsburg was involved in the battle to stay up and ended up only two points away from relegation rank 15th in the 2nd Bundesliga South . In the preliminary round 1976/77 Gerd Menne was replaced by Max Merkel and then ended his coaching in professional football.

From 1983 to 1987 he was the head coach of the major division Hassia Bingen .
Because of his ties to SG Eintracht Bad Kreuznach, he returned to the coaching bench for a few weeks in 2008 and led the team through a few games in the Southwest Football Association.
