Gerda Darnstädt

Gerda Darnstädt (partly also Darmstädt ; * April 14, 1913 ; † September 8, 2008 ) was a German SED functionary and a functionary of the Democratic Women's Union of Germany (DFD). She was first chairwoman of the Dresden district board of the DFD.

Life

Darnstädt came from a social democratic working class family. In 1929 she joined the SPD herself and later became a member of the KPD . Until 1945 she worked as a worker and office assistant. In 1945 she rejoined the KPD and became a member of the SED in 1946 when the SPD and KPD were forced to merge.

During the Second World War Darnstädt worked in an armaments factory with foreign workers , where she was arrested twice. Her husband was temporarily imprisoned in a concentration camp during the war .

On May 10, 1945, Darnstädt received a white armband from the Soviet headquarters. Before doing business, she made sure that there was no looting . It also helped refugees and people who had become homeless in the heavy air raids on Dresden in February 1945 to find living space in the few houses still standing. From 1945 she was an employee of the People's Police and from October was responsible for custom in the state of Saxony .

From 1950 Darnstädt worked for the DFD: first as first chairwoman of the Dresden district board, then from 1952 to 1960 as first chairwoman of the Dresden district board. She was also a member of the Dresden District Assembly and until 1960 was a member of the Dresden District Management of the SED.

After completing her studies, she worked as a plant manager at VEB Dresdner Margarinewerk from 1965 . She last lived in Dresden.
