Gerda Falkner (born April 20, 1964 in Linz ) is an Austrian political scientist specializing in European studies , professor at the University of Vienna and head of the Institute for European Integration Research.

Life

Born and raised in Linz, Falkner studied political science at the University of Vienna , where she received her Mag. Phil. graduated (diploma thesis on Austrian foreign policy in Latin America) and in 1992 with a thesis on decision-making processes in the European Union as a Dr. phil. PhD. In 1989/90 she completed a postgraduate course in European politics at the Europa Kolleg in Bruges / Belgium, Master in Advanced European Studies in 1991. In 1998 she completed her habilitation in political science at the University of Vienna with a thesis on EU governance .

Falkner worked for the Austrian Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs in 1987/88 , and in 1990/1991 she conducted research on the social and labor market aspects of Austria's impending EU accession on behalf of the Ministry of Social Affairs. From 1992 to 1998 she was university assistant at the Institute for Political Science at the University of Vienna ; In 1994/1995 she spent a year as a Research Fellow at the University of Warwick and the University of Essex (England), published a book on European constitutional development (together with Michael Nentwich ) and prepared her habilitation thesis on advocacy at EU level. Since 1998 she has been an associate professor at the University of Vienna. Between 1998 and 2003, Falkner headed a political science research group at the Max Planck Institute for Social Research in Cologne on the implementation of EU law at the national level. From 2002 to 2008 she headed the Political Science Department at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Vienna. She has headed the Institute for European Integration Research (EIF) since 2008, initially at the Austrian Academy of Sciences , and since 2012 at the University of Vienna.

Gerda Falkner was elected a corresponding member in Germany in 2010 and a real member of the philosophical-historical class of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in 2013.
