Gerda Marie Scheidl (born June 7, 1913 in Geestemünde ; † February 16, 2005 in Salzhemmendorf ) was a German children's book author .

Life

Gerda Marie Scheidl grew up in Geestemünde ( Bremerhaven ) and attended the girls' high school there . After passing her degree, she took dance courses at the Hellerau Laxenburg dance school near Vienna and took acting lessons. She found engagement at the Stadttheater Bremerhaven early on . After the marriage of the opera singer Otto Scheidl , the Scheidl couple were forced to leave their hometown during the last years of the war . Both found employment at the Dortmund City Theater and in Wiesbaden , where Gerda Marie Scheidl withdrew from professional life due to the birth of two sons and began studying philosophy and art history , among other things . This period also saw the publication of her first children's book falls ( With dream males to fairyland ) in small print runs in the self-published , a collection of fairytale Christmas stories in narrative tradition of the Brothers Grimm .

Returned to Bremerhaven after the war, Gerda Marie Scheidl worked for radio and television . She soon took over the management of the first children's theater productions at the city theater, where she prepared numerous fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm in a child-friendly manner and had them staged. The manuscripts she revised found their way to German-speaking countries, Austria and Switzerland , where similar stage projects were about to be realized.

In addition, she published her own books for children from time to time, which were translated into several languages. Her Christmas stories The four lights of the shepherd Simon ( illustrated by Marcus Pfister ) and A donkey goes to Bethlehem (illustrated by Bernadette Watts ) are considered classics . In recent years, these books have been successfully reprinted by the Swiss children's book publisher NordSüd , which has been publishing Gerda Marie Scheidl's books since the mid-1980s.

Gerda Marie Scheidl died on February 16, 2005, very old in Salzhemmendorf .
