Sophie Anna Marie Gerda von Below was born on November 9, 1894 on Gut Saleske in the Stolp district as the daughter of Rittmeister Walter von Below and the writer Anna von Herder . She was a great-great-granddaughter of Johann Gottfried Herder . She was first taught by private tutors and in 1909 came to a lyceum in Weimar , where she graduated from high school in 1911. In 1913 she went to Berlin, where she studied music and composition, among other things. After the outbreak of World War I , she went to a hospital in Schlawe as a Red Cross nurse , but only lasted until Easter 1915. She then went to Blankenburg to relax .

In 1919 she married Albrecht Freiherr Treusch von Buttlar-Brandenfels , who was corvette captain . The family lived in Berlin. The marriage resulted in two sons and a daughter.

In the period between the world wars she published poems and prose under her maiden name von Below , including verses to Adolf Hitler in 1937 . In 1943 her last book was published, the collection of short stories Heimat des Bluts .

She lost her husband and a son in World War II . She moved from Berlin to Hinterzarten in 1953 , then to Freiburg im Breisgau in 1954 and finally to Darmstadt . She practiced the profession of a scientific graphologist. In December 1953 she took part in the Herder honor in Weimar , where she gave a greeting. In Freiburg she was involved in the World Organization of Mothers of All Nations and became the second district chairwoman of the organization. Her works were rarely printed. In the anthology Pommersche Literatur published by Fritz Raeck in 1969, she is represented with six poems. In 1974, on her 80th birthday, a small selection of works appeared again on 24 pages. She died on March 30, 1975 in Darmstadt.
