Gerhard Birk (historian)

Gerhard Birk (born April 29, 1938 in the administrative district of Breslau , Lower Silesia ) is a German historian and archivist .

Life

With the end of the world war , Birk and his family had to leave their Silesian homeland, he initially lived with relatives in Berlin . After a broken apprenticeship as a farmer, he learned the trade of an accountant and wholesaler. He completed his secondary school leaving certificate at evening school and passed the Abitur at the workers 'and farmers ' faculty . From 1958 to 1960 he did his military service as a member of the NVA air force .

He studied German literature and history at the Pedagogical University of Potsdam and received his doctorate there in 1968 with the thesis of literary Abuse elements to the formation of spurious home relationships with certain territories socialist states as a method for generating revanchist attitudes in young people of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Dr. phil. He also completed a distance learning course in archival science at the Humboldt University in Berlin .

Birk became a research assistant at the Institute for Cultural History and at the Central Institute for History at the Academy of Sciences of the GDR . As such, he was a regular co-author of the yearbook for folklore and cultural history and the magazine military history . With the German reunification in 1990 he was appointed Vice-Head of the Brandenburg State Main Archives . In 2000 he retired. Gerhard Birk, who lives in Ludwigsfelde , is the author and editor of numerous regional, folkloric and cultural-historical publications. In 2005 his autobiographical novel Frozen Tears - bloody snow was published. Escape and expulsion from Silesia. He has been married to the teacher Liane Birk since 1966; they have a son and a daughter.
