Gerhard Drekonja (born June 26, 1939 in Kornat ; in publications also referred to as Gerhard Drekonja-Kornat ) is emeritus professor at the University of Vienna , where he held the chair for non-European history with special attention to Latin America .

Life

Drekonja's first contact with Latin America took place in 1963 as a member of a literacy project at Cornell University in Ojojona (Honduras). From 1966 to 1977 he traveled to Latin America as a correspondent and development practitioner, a. a. for the German Foundation for International Development . From 1977 to 1983 he was professor of political science at the Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá , where he was in charge of the Relaciones Internacionales de América Latina (RIAL) program, whose members explored the continent's potential for autonomy.

On his return to Austria he habilitated in 1983 at the University of Klagenfurt , co-director was the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Contemporary Latin American studies and worked until 1990 as academic director of the Austrian Latin America Institute , where he editor of the Journal of Latin America - Vienna was .

In 1990 he was appointed full professor at the newly founded Latin America Chair at the University of Vienna, an activity that he pursued until his retirement in 2008. During his tenure as a professor, he was in charge of the University of Vienna's academic relations with Latin American institutions, beginning in 1993 with an agreement with the Universidad de Chile . He has served on the editorial board of various specialist publications in the Americas and is a Research Associate at the University of Pittsburgh . As emeritus, he was a visiting professor at the Universidad del Norte in Barranquilla (Colombia) several times until 2010 , where he worked on the preparation of a master’s program in international relations and was appointed professor honorario in 2010 . In February 2016 he was the inspirer of the seminar “Los años oscuros de Reichel-Dolmatoff ” at the Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá . Drekonja is a member of the Consejo Científico-Académico of the XVIII. Congress of the Federación Internacional de Estudios sobre América Latina y el Caribe (FIEALC) from 25th to 28th July 2017 in Belgrade .
