Gerhard Hellmers

Gerhard Hellmers (born June 2, 1860 in Nordenham ; † June 17, 1944 in Bremen ) was a Germanist , educator and theater critic .

biography

Hellmers was the son of a teacher. He grew up in Jever and graduated from high school there. He studied new languages at the University of Leipzig and the University of Göttingen and received his doctorate Dr. phil. in Göttingen . During his studies he became a member of the "Student Choral Society of Georgia Augusta" (today StMV Blue Singers Göttingen ). In 1886 he became a teacher at the old grammar school in Bremen. In 1908 he was appointed professor.

From 1915 to 1925 he was rector of the old grammar school. Together with Kunsthalle director Gustav Pauli and pastor Albert Kalthoff , he co-founded the Goethebund in 1900 and was its chairman from 1906 to 1944. He published French and English scripts for school use. He also appeared as a theater critic.

The Gerhard-Hellmers-Weg in Bremen- Oberneuland was named after him.
