Gerhard Hermes
Gerhard Hermes SAC (born March 10, 1909 in Hollnich , Prüm district ; † February 6, 1988 ) was a German Pallottine priest, editor and author.
Life
Growing up in an Eifel village as the third of eleven children of a rural family of craftsmen, Hermes came to the Pallottines at the age of 13 . He passed his Abitur in Koblenz and then studied theology in Limburg , Bonn , Berlin and Rome . He was ordained a priest on March 19, 1934. drafted into the Wehrmacht in 1940, he served as a paramedic on the Eastern Front. He was awarded the Iron Cross, First Class.
In 1951, Hermes took over the editing of Rosenkranz magazine . In 1970, Hermes founded the magazine Der Fels “in conjunction with the movement for the Pope and the Church ” , which soon became the most important mouthpiece of the conservative German-speaking Catholics who were oriented towards church tradition and traditional liturgy. Among his fellow campaigners were also the Mainz professor for canon law Georg May and the Catholic philosopher Walter Hoeres .
Since Hermes supported the dispute over the French Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre and, on the other hand, took a position against the Würzburg Synod , tensions arose with German bishops. Hermes resigned from the Fels editorial team in 1986 due to illness. His successor was Heinz Froitzheim.
The grave of Gerhard Hermes is in the Pallottine cemetery in Limburg.
