Walter Hoeres

Walter Hoeres (born May 6, 1928 in Gladbeck ; † January 14, 2016 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German philosopher . His specialty was epistemology on the basis of scholasticism .

Life

Hoeres studied at the Philosophical-Theological University of St. Georgen and at the University of Frankfurt Catholic theology and philosophy and was on 25 July 1951, a dissertation on Husserl's phenomenology with Theodor W. Adorno doctorate .

After completing his doctorate, Walter Hoeres initially worked as a journalist for Catholic newspapers, including the Rheinischer Merkur and the Deutsche Tagespost . In 1957 he qualified as one of the first laypeople as a university lecturer at the theological faculty of the University of Salzburg . There he was appointed professor at the Philosophical Institute of Papal Law by the Vatican Study Congregation in 1964 , which is attached to the Salzburg Theological Faculty. From 1961 to 1993 Hoeres was Professor of Philosophy at the University of Education in Freiburg i. Br. Active. In addition to numerous treatises on the history of higher scholasticism , he wrote books, among others, about the Franciscan theologian Johannes Duns Scotus and a critique of transcendental philosophy. In 1993 he presented a phenomenological anthropology . In 2005 he published the book Der Weg der Anschauung. Landscape between aesthetics and metaphysics . In spring 2012, Gradatio entis - Being as Participation was published by Duns Scotus and Franz Suárez . His last work The Justice Betrayed. After parting with God's holy majesty appeared shortly after his death.

Hoeres was one of the regular employees of the Zeitbühne and continued this journalistic work in the epoch . He also gave numerous lectures and appeared in radio broadcasts and in the evening studios on Hessischer Rundfunk and Südwestfunk .

The convinced Catholic spoke fluent Latin and moderated the Frankfurt Colloquia Latina for over thirty years. The reintroduction of Holy Mass in Latin according to the Tridentine rite was a matter close to his heart.

In 1967 he took over from his teacher Hans Meyer (1884–1966) the editing of the series of researches on modern philosophy and its history .

Hoeres saw himself as a defender of the Catholic faith and the Tridentine liturgy . On February 23, 1969, he founded the Movement for the Pope and the Church together with Hans Milch and the Mannheim senior student councilor Fritz Feuling . V., which belonged to the tradition-oriented groups after the Second Vatican Council , and was its chairman for many years.

Walter Hoeres wrote regularly in the Catholic monthly Theological and was a member of the Fördergemeinschaft Theologisches eV , which publishes the magazine. His articles also appeared regularly in the journal Der Fels , published by the Pallottine Father Gerhard Hermes .

Until the unauthorized episcopal ordination on June 30, 1988, he was associated with the Priestly Society of St. Pius X and also held philosophy lectures at the International Sacred Seminary in Zaitzkofen . After the episcopal ordination he taught at the seminary of the Society of St. Peter , but remained connected with the Society of St. Pius X and occasionally published in its organs.

In 2015, in connection with the refugee crisis, the Chancellor criticized the “redistribution strategies”: “What particularly upsets me about the whole question is the statement by church representatives that they do not want to distinguish between religions and denominations when accepting refugees. Are we so far that, for reasons of political correctness, we have forgotten the admonition of the holy apostle Paul: 'Help your brothers first'? "

He lived in Frankfurt am Main with his wife and children. His grave is in the Bockenheim cemetery. The historian Peter Hoeres is his son.
