Gerhard Hiesel

Gerhard Hiesel (born December 1, 1941 in Vienna ) is an Austrian classical archaeologist .

Life

Gerhard Hiesel is the son of Franz Hiesel . He studied from 1959 to 1966. In 1966 he received his doctorate in Hamburg under Ulf Jantzen with a thesis on Sami stone tools. In 1977 he completed his habilitation at the University of Freiburg with a study on late Helladic house architecture . Until his retirement in 2007 he worked at the Archaeological Institute of the University of Freiburg. His teaching activities also took him to other German and Swiss universities, such as Bern and Basel.

Hiesel worked for many years in the excavations at Tiryns Castle . Later he was involved in the excavation projects of the Freiburg Archaeological Institute under Volker Michael Strocka in Thugga (Dougga) and Nysa am Mäander . His research focus is Aegean archeology .

Hiesel has been married to the Swiss sculptor Bettina Eichin since 1967 .
