Gerhard M. Cartford

Gerhard Malling Cartford (born March 21, 1923 in Fort-Dauphin , Madagascar ; † February 8, 2016 in Minneapolis , Minnesota ) was a church musician in the USA .

Life

Cartford served in the US Army from 1943 to 1946 and participated in World War II . He then studied at St. Olaf College and obtained a bachelor's degree in music in 1948 and a master's degree in church music in New York in 1950 . After a year abroad in Norway , Cartford worked as an organist. From 1961 he taught at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin . In 1974 he moved to the Lutheran Seminary in Saint Paul, Minnesota , where he taught until 1978. In 1977 he became the commissioner for liturgical renewal and church music in Latin America .

Works

In 1978 Cartford worked on the Lutheran Book of Worship , an English-language hymn book for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the USA. He translated many sacred songs from English into Spanish and wrote the melodies for the following songs , among others :

  • At last, Lord, your word of promise fulfilling
  • Great god, our source ( EG 431 als Gott, our origin )
  • Let my prayer rise before as incense
  • My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord
  • Do senor
