Gerhard Matthäus (born January 3, 1924 ) is a former German soccer player. In the 1950s he played for the BSG Einheit Ost Leipzig and the SC Rotation Leipzig in the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football .

Athletic career

At the age of 24, Gerhard Matthäus joined the Leipzig sports club Probstheida in 1948 , which played for points in the Leipzig district soccer league in the 1948/49 season. After the establishment of the second-class state class of Saxony , the Probstheidaer played for the state championship with Matthäus in 1949/50, but were only able to qualify for the league of the German Sports Committee (later called the GDR League ), which was newly established in the 1950/51 season. As early as October 1949, the SG Probstheida had been converted into the company sports association (BSG) Erich Zeigner Leipzig. During the league season 1950/51 Erich Zeigner became the BSG unit east. Matthäus was one of their most important players, he played all 18 league games in which he scored eleven goals. 1951/52 he completed only one game in the league and was also involved in promotion to the GDR league in 1953 with only 17 of 24 point games and three goals.

In his first league season 1953/54 he returned to his old strength, because he played all 28 league games again and was also successful with five goals. He was usually used as a striker. In 1954/55 there were again profound changes for the team, because the soccer section of the BSG Einheit Ost was taken over by the newly founded Rotation Leipzig sports club in November 1954. There were only 26 league games played, of which striker Matthäus completed 19 games and scored seven goals. In the meantime he was 31 years old, and so he only played the upper league transition round for the SC rotation in the fall of 1955, which was held to switch from the summer-spring rhythm to the calendar year season. After playing twelve of the thirteen transition games and scoring two more goals, Gerhard Matthäus ended his career in GDR-wide football matches. There he was used 19 times in the league and scored 14 goals. In the second-rate GDR league he was used 36 times and scored 14 goals there too.
