Gerhard Meier (pedagogue)

Gerhard Meier , also Gehard (i) Meyer, (born February 26, 1616 in Bremen ; † April 26 (or April 15) 1695 in Bremen) was a German teacher and rector of the Illustre grammar school in Bremen.

biography

Meier was the son of a businessman and attended high school in Bremen. From 1638 he studied at the University of Helmstedt , 1642 at the University of Leipzig , 1643 at the Frisian University Franeker and from 1644 in London and at the University of Cambridge .

In 1644 Meier became professor of eloquence and pedagogy and in 1648 professor of logic and metaphysics at the Gymnasium Illustre (the first university) in Bremen. In 1651 he also took over the field of theology and in 1652 that of mathematics. In 1655 he was appointed rector of the Illustre grammar school . As a universal scholar , he wrote a number of works in many areas of the scientific discussion of the time. His successor as rector in June 1696 was Dr. Gurtelius from Hanau.

His son of the same name, Gerhard Meier, was a doctor of theology and professor of mathematics at the Illustre grammar school . In 1681 he was elected ordinari pastoris of the St. Stephen's church in a very contentious election ; the election as preacher was confirmed by the Senate in 1683.
