Gerhard Schmitt-Rink
Gerhard Wilhelm Schmitt-Rink , also Willy Rink , (born January 22, 1926 in Wiesbaden ; † May 24, 2020 ) was a German economist and author . He was a professor of economics , most recently retired .
Life
Schmitt-Rink grew up as an illegitimate half-Jew in Wiesbaden and was adopted by his mother's second, Catholic partner. The family lived in a multi-family house inhabited by Jews and Christians, in which social tensions arose from 1935 during the Nazi era . In order not to attract attention, he took the first name “Gerhard” and initially believed in “world capitalist Jewry”. Through many conversations with his mother and “illegally” listening to the BBC , he soon had doubts and distanced himself from Nazi propaganda.
After the war, studied Schmitt Rink economics and business administration in Frankfurt and was at the University of Mainz in 1962 to Dr. rer. pole. PhD . In 1965 he completed his habilitation in economics.
Schmitt-Rink was appointed full professor at RWTH Aachen University , the University of Tübingen and the University of Bochum . In 1990 he was appointed the founding dean of the new economics faculty at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and retired in 1991.
He was also a visiting professor at the University of Kabul , the School of International Relations at the University of Southern California , the Osmania University Hyderabad , the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies in Singapore and the Tongji University in Shanghai. On behalf of the Goethe Institute , he taught in Egypt, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Ghana, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Jordan, Kenya, Malaysia, Nepal and Nigeria.
Private life
Schmitt-Rink was married to the politician Margret Funke-Schmitt-Rink, who died in 1998 .
Honors
Schmitt-Rink was an honorary doctor of the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg and the Technical University of St. Petersburg and was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class .
