Gerhard Uhlig

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gerhard Uhlig (* 1924 in Leipzig ; † 2015 in Münster ) was a German painter , graphic artist , photographer and art teacher. He was a student of Josef Hegenbarth , Max Schwimmer , Johannes Itten and Willi Baumeister .

Life

After the Second World War, Gerhard Uhlig began studying art at the age of 21 and attended several universities.

Uhlig described Baumeister as one of his most important teachers: “During my art studies there were two teachers who particularly influenced my view of artistic activity: J. Hegenbarth and W. Baumeister. Both were workers, they hated artistic allure. ”This is how Willi Baumeister said of his pupil“ His original artistic inclination and talent led to the best results in my class thanks to his natural diligence and intensity. You were excellent! ”.

In 1953 Uhlig became an art teacher and from 1969 a director of studies and a specialist in art education in Münster.

In the 1960s he developed picture compositions that create precise volumes and spaces through lines and are accentuated by sparingly used dots of color. He does not call them abstract because they actually exist on the painting or drawing surface as graphic or colored shapes. The effect of his pictorial art arises from the type of relationship between shapes and colors. The lines are supplemented by other works, mainly from the 1960s and 1970s. Uhlig's collages are reminiscent of the long almost forgotten serial and concrete works of “ OP Art ”. In particular, the skill and accuracy of these works are striking, which draw their charm not least from this precision.
