The former court square with the linden tree of Vollmarshausen is a historical attraction in the Lohfeld district of Vollmarshausen in the northern Hessian district of Kassel . The square is also Schoepp chair or Thingplace called and is a former courthouse square with a court Linde .

location

The former court square with the village linden is located in the center of the village on the corner of Kasseler Strasse and Brunnenstrasse. The Wahlebach used to be visible along this path (today in an underground canal). The tree is surrounded by a wall ring with a diameter of eleven meters. Immediately next to the tree is a stone table and the remains of a bench.

history

The origins of the square go back to the Middle Ages when court days were held on the site. The court was responsible for the places Vollmarshausen, Crumbach and Ochshausen , which together form the municipality of Lohfelden today. A linden tree was later planted as protection. The processes involved, among other things, border violations, thefts and brawls. Fines or penalties such as pillory and stake were common punishments . Serious crimes, on the other hand, were tried in Kassel , which the court later moved to when there were no longer any open-air trials.

Changes in the 2010s

The more than 250-year-old linden tree was a natural monument , but had to be felled in autumn 2015 because it was infested with fungi. The tree was then replaced by a new linden tree. In 2018, an old half-timbered house next to the former town hall was demolished to make way for an extension to the music school.

Structural situation today

The new linden tree is an offshoot of the old one. On the southern side there is another house (no. 5) with a staircase and a front door from the construction period. It is one of around two dozen cultural monuments in the village.

To this day, celebrations and rallies take place under the linden tree.
