Gerlach Scheltinga, also: Gerloff Scheltinga (born April 15, 1708 in Leeuwarden , † February 9, 1765 in Leiden ) was a Dutch legal scholar.

Life

The son of the lawyer and mayor Eco Gerloffs Scheltinga (* October 8, 1671 in Ternaard; † January 16, 1746 in Leeuwarden) and his wife Catharina Legentijl (* December 26, 1680 in Leeuwarden; † October 1, 1760 ibid), had how his brother Theodor Scheltinga (1706–1780) received his education at the school in his hometown. In 1724 both began studying at Franeker University , where Johann Gottlieb Heineccius , Jacobus Voorda and Abraham Wieling became his formative teachers. After defending the subject de Emancipationibus in 1730 , he moved to Leiden University , where he enrolled on September 7, 1730.

Here he had attended Antonius Schultingh's lectures . As the successor to Johannes Alexander Roëll, he was appointed Professor of Law at the Illustrious School in Deventer in 1731 . Returning to Franeker, he acquired the academic degree of Doctor of Laws on June 5, 1731 , with the defense of his second work on the subject of de Emancipationibus . On September 10, 1731 he gave his inaugural address de summa edicti praetoris in Romana republica utilitate in Deventer . Here he had lectured on Roman law and Dutch law.

On February 17, 1738 he received a call as professor for civil law (civil law) at the University of Leiden, which task he took over on June 27, 1738 with the speech pro Jurisprudentia et Jurisconsultis . Here he also took part in the organizational tasks of the Leiden University and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1745/46 and 1761/62 . For this purpose he had given the speeches ad locum Ciceronis and de romani juris studio futuris in Belgio foederato, Hollandia nominatim, Jurisconsultis neccessario quidem sed non sufficiente . Scheltinga's merits are mainly in the field of legal education. In this context he also appeared as the editor of Hugo Grotius Inleiding tot de Hollandsche rechtsgeleerdheid with comments.

His daughter Johann Wilhelmina Scheltinga (born May 18, 1746 in Leiden; †) comes from his marriage to Jacoba Magaretha Marienburg (born March 17, 1715 in Deventer; † June 9, 1759 in Leiden) on June 24, 1736 in Deventer. February 20, 1822 in Deventer), who married the mayor of Deventer Coenraad Alexander Jordens (born July 6, 1749 in Deventer; † January 19, 1807 ibid.) On August 2, 1768 in Leiden.
