Gerlfangen is a district of the municipality Rehlingen-Siersburg in the Saarlouis district ( Saarland ) and is located on a hill in the northern Saar - Nied -Winkel.

geography

Gerlfangen has 741 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2005) and is 356  m above sea level. NN the highest district in the municipality. Gerlfangen has an area of 431 ha and is the central village of Saarlouiser Nordgau. The agricultural place is surrounded by orchards , where medlars can also be found. They are processed into fruit brandy.

The fruit blossom and the general beginning of vegetation are relatively late, which is due to the exposed altitude and the heavy soils. The Saargau is influenced by the Atlantic climate. The air humidity does not drop below 70%, there is absolute calm only on 4% of all days. In addition to long periods of sunshine, numerous summer thunderstorms are typical for the area; the most abundant rainfall occurs in August.

history

Eleven Iron Age barrows indicate early settlement in the area. Traces of residents from Gallo-Roman times also bear witness to the long local history. The place name, which at that time should have been Gerelfingen , probably comes from the time of the Franconian conquest .

According to a document from 1030, Jutta, the wife of Duke Adalbert of Lorraine , gave gifts to the St. Matthias monastery in Trier , some of which were related to Gerlfangen. Jutta was also the founder of the Abbey of the Holy Cross in Bouzonville , and the Gerlfanger Church was also consecrated to the Holy Cross early on.

Until 1766 Gerlfangen belonged to the Duchy of Lorraine .

In 1944, towards the end of the Second World War, a camp was set up in neighboring Fürweiler for 229 forced laborers who were used for digging work.

Until the end of 1973 Gerlfangen was an independent municipality. In the course of the territorial and administrative reform , the previously independent municipality of Gerlfangen became a district of the municipality of Rehlingen on January 1, 1974, which was later renamed Rehlingen-Siersburg.

Competition "Our village has a future"

In 2011 Gerlfangen took part in the district competition of Our Village Has a Future and won the gold medal. With the win, Gerlfangen qualified for the state competition in 2012, which it won. Gerlfangen therefore represented the Saarland in the 2013 national competition. On June 13, 2013, a federal evaluation committee visited Gerlfangen. On June 26th the medals were awarded and Gerlfangen and 6 other villages were awarded bronze. In January 2014, a 30-person delegation from Gerlfangen received the medal from Agriculture Minister Friedrich at the Green Week in the Berlin Exhibition Center. Two months later, Federal President Joachim Gauck held a reception at Bellevue Palace.

politics

Local council

from 2019

In the 2019 local elections, the CDU Gerlfangen no longer ran its own list for the elections. Thus only one election proposal from the SPD Gerlfangen was presented to the municipal election officer. A majority vote was therefore held. The Gerlfanger could choose the new local council from 18 people. The local council in Gerlfangen still consists of 9 members. Most of the votes went to Thomas Hoffmann (348 votes), Joshua Pawlak (348 votes), Ottmar Schellenbach (342 votes) and Jörg Wilhelm (338 votes)! In the constituent local council meeting, Thomas Hoffmann (SPD) was re-elected mayor and Jörg Wilhelm (SPD) was his deputy. Gerlfangen will also be represented with a seat in the Rehlingen-Siersburg municipal council in the 2019-2024 electoral period. As in the 2014-2019 electoral period, Joshua Pawlak (SPD) will take over the mandate. coat of arms

The coat of arms shows a silver shield head with a red cross, which indicates that it belongs to the diocese of Trier. Underneath, a silver, mutilated eagle is flanked by two golden ears of wheat. Golden masonry can be seen under the eagle. While the coat of arms is reminiscent of the Lorraine period and is taken from the Lorraine coat of arms, the ears of corn and the masonry symbolize the two main sources of income in the area: agriculture and building trade.

Culture and sights

church
Crucifixion group

Today's parish church goes back to a building from the 15th century, which had to give way to a new building in 1864. The tower of this 19th century church has been preserved; the rest of the current church building dates from the second half of the 20th century.

Numerous village and road crosses have been preserved in and around Gerlfangen . In the Keltenstraße there is also a sandstone crucifixion group from 1727. A Marian grotto also bears witness to the spread of the Catholic faith in and around Gerlfangen.

The living conditions of earlier generations are documented in a Lorraine farmhouse on Lommerweg; this also includes the collection of tools and work equipment housed in the barn.

The Schäslong cultural facility , which also has a library, has been located in the former Gerlfanger school since October 2007 .

Regular events

The Quetschenkirmes in September is a regular event. The Gerlfangen Christmas market, which will take place for the fourth time in 2014, is only allowed to take part in Gerlfangen.

societies

In addition to the volunteer fire brigade , the Loreley music association, a pensioners' association and other cultural and social groups, the Gerlfangen youth club has been offering a cultural venue for young people and the young at heart from the region since 1985.

The Friends of the Nature Park Village Gerlfangen e. V. organizes spring and autumn hikes as well as wild garlic days every year . The open garden day is also known beyond the borders of the municipality.

Economy and Infrastructure

education

The AWO Kinderhaus Gerlfangen is also visited by children from the surrounding villages. The primary school students attend the Niedschule in Hemmersdorf . As part of the voluntary all-day school, they can also be looked after there in the afternoon and have lunch. There is an extended secondary school in Rehlingen.

Multi-generation house and Gerlfanger village house

In September 2011, after a long period of stagnation in Gerlfangen, triggered by the closure of the primary school by the state government at the time (2005), the conversion of the former primary school into a multi-generation house began. The work to complete the first phase of construction took 2½ years.
Large parts of the renovation were carried out by volunteer craftsmen (including plasterers, tilers, painters, bricklayers, joiners). Almost 2600 hours of work were done by almost 70 different helpers. In addition, there are almost 3,000 hours of voluntary planning, which arose through the regular planning meetings between the members of the citizens' association "Together and for one another" Gerlfangen eV with the community, the architect and the planning company. In February 2014 the corridor, the event room, the village café and the toilet facilities were opened with Environment Minister Reinhold Jost and District Administrator Patrick Lauer. The advisory office is still being planned and converted, which in future will serve as a direct contact point for the people of the Nordgau. Since the opening of the village house, the residents of the Nordgau and the many different guests have been able to meet and exchange ideas in the village café.

The "Schäslong" library of the Friends of the Nature Park Village Gerlfangen eV and its club room, the Gerlfangen music club, the Gerlfangen retirement and senior citizens' association with club room and PC room, the Gerlfangen volunteer fire brigade and the Gerlfangen youth club are also located in the Gerlfanger Dorfhaus.
