German Konstantinowitsch Lukjanow

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

German Konstantinowitsch Lukjanow ( Russian Герман Константинович Лукьянов ; born August 23, 1936 in Leningrad ; † July 5, 2019 ) was a Russian jazz bandleader, composer , flugelhorn player and trumpeter of modern jazz . He was one of the most prominent representatives of the Russian jazz scene of the post-Stalinist era of the 1950s and 1960s.

Live and act

German Lukjanow was born in Leningrad in 1936 as the son of a marine and a pianist. In 1952 he turned to jazz and had an influential quintet in Leningrad. After studying composition at the Leningrad Conservatory for several years , he moved to Moscow in 1957 to continue his studies at the Conservatory there. There he attended Aram Khachaturian's composition class until 1960 . His diploma thesis consisted of a concerto for trumpet and orchestra . After 1958 he founded a septet with Alexei Subow , Georgi Garamin and others, which turned to polyphonic experiments based on Gerry Mulligan . Later his trios (without bass) in particular brought him great recognition; in these the drummer Vladimir Vasilikov and the pianist Leonid Chizhik participated . His composition "Useless Conversation" is of particular interest. Lukyanov's trumpet chops a kind of repetitive Morse code onto a note, accompanied by sparse piano chords and a cymbal rhythm. One discovers traces of Miles Davis in Lukjanow, especially in his use of short phrases, which he always plays slightly behind the beat (Starr). In the 1970s he formed the formation Cadence (Russian KADANS , actually an abbreviation for Kamerny dschasowy ansambl ).
