S. Frederick Starr

S. Frederick Starr (born March 24, 1940 as Stephen Frederick Starr) is an American scientist and jazz musician .

Life

Starr received his BA from Yale University in 1962 and his PhD from Princeton University , in Princeton , New Jersey . He speaks fluent Russian and so far (2011) has written more than 20 books and more than 200 articles on Russia and on Eurasian topics, in particular on Afghanistan , Singkiang ( Xinjiang ) and its culture and population, as well as on the Central Asian and Caucasus republics.

Starr began his relationship with the Turkic peoples as an archaeologist in Turkey and, together with George F. Kennan and James Billington, founded the Kennan Institute for Advanced Russian Studies , which led to the first intensive contacts between political researchers from the USA and Central Asia. He was the vice president of Tulane University in New Orleans , Louisiana . His close ties to traditional New Orleans jazz stem from this time . Starr has played with the Louisiana Repertory Jazz Ensemble all over the United States, toured France and the Soviet Union in 1983 , and has appeared on television with the band in Italy, Japan, and Sweden in the years since. Starr has published a dozen books on New Orleans and Louisiana, the state's music, and its cuisine.

Starr was an advisor to three presidents of the United States on issues relating to Russia and the Soviet Union and to Central Asia. He has also prepared reports for the United General Staff, the Joint Chiefs of Staff , the United States on Afghanistan, Central Asia and the Caucasus . He is Professor at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, DC , affiliated with Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore , Maryland .

In 1994 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
