Gero Neugebauer (born on August 23, 1941 in Zirke / Warthe ) is a German political scientist and former research associate at the Otto Suhr Institute of the Free University of Berlin . One of the main focuses of Neugebauer's work is party research in the Federal Republic of Germany. Here he is particularly considered an expert on the political development of the SPD , especially in the eastern German states .

academic career

Neugebauer studied social sciences and political science in Hamburg and West Berlin from 1964 to 1969 . He then worked until 1974 as a research assistant at the Central Institute for Social Science Research at the Free University of Berlin. During his subsequent activity (until 1996) as a scientific employee in the area of GDR research , he received his doctorate in political science in 1978 . His work was reviewed by Nils Diederich and Dietrich Staritz . In 1996 he joined the Department of Political Science, since 1999 at the Otto Stammer -Zentrum extended to empirical political sociology . In 2006 he left the service as a research assistant.

In addition to party research, his main subject areas are German domestic politics and contemporary history . He is currently leading a research project on the SPD in the eastern German states.

After various publications on the political system of the GDR (focus on the SED and the state apparatus) and on the transformation of the GDR in the years 1989/1990 up to German reunification , he is considered an expert in GDR research, especially the East German party system, especially for the development of the PDS and later Die Linke as well as for the SPD. As such, he is also relatively often present as an interview partner on current developments in this party spectrum in the political print media as well as on radio and television.
