Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu ( Japanese 乃 木 坂 春香 の 秘密 , Eng. "Haruka Nogizaka's secret") is a Japanese light novel series by the author Yūsaku Igarashi , which was provided with illustrations by Shaa . The first chapters of the light novel appeared in 2002 within Dengeki hp magazine , published by MediaWorks . The first independent publication as a book followed in 2004. Building on the success of the light novel, adaptations were made in the form of a manga in 2006, which was followed by an anime television series and an implementation as a Ren'ai adventure for the PlayStation 2 in 2008 .

action

In the private Hakujō school , the common and average student Yūto Ayase and the rich and attractive Haruka Nogizaka, admired by all, attend the same class. Praised by the rumors about her person in the sky, an invisible wall builds up between Haruka and her classmates, who even give her French nicknames like Nuit Étoile (白銀 の 星 屑ニ ュ イ ・ エ ト ワ ー レ, Nyui etowāre , German "Silver Starry Sky ") or Lumière du Clavier (鍵盤 上 の 姫 君ル ミ エ ー ル ・ ド ゥ ・ ク ラ ヴ ィ エ, rumiēru du kuravie , dt. "Princess above the keyboard"). One day, Yūto is supposed to bring an over-stretched book back to the school library for his good friend and Otaku Nobunaga Asakura. He bumps into Haruka and finds out her biggest secret - she's a huge fan of anime, manga and otaku culture itself. He promises her to keep this secret as best as possible and a close friendship develops between the two.

Little by little he gets to know the members of Haruka's family. These include Haruka's younger sister Mika, her anime and manga-hating father, her mother who keeps her father under control and various maids with crazy hobbies and idiosyncrasies. However, Yūto's family only seems to consist of his sister Ruko and his teacher Yukari in the anime. Both behave like two drunk sisters and when drunk they don't miss any opportunity to stuff themselves with food or dig into the other guests. In the manga, on the other hand, he has an older sister, Ruko, who always tries hard but is almost never present.

As Yūto's and Haruka's friendship grows ever closer, under constant observation by Mika, one day Shiina Amamiya, another good piano player, turns up at school. A triangular relationship is formed between Yūto, Haruka and Shiina. Based on these situations, there are numerous comical situations that make up the core of the manga, while the television series ends with a happy ending between Yūto and Haruka.

Characters

main characters

Yūto Ayase ( 綾 瀬 裕 人 , Ayase Yūto )

Yūto is the male protagonist of the plot. He is an ordinary second year student who, by chance, is let in on the secret of his highly respected classmate Haruka. By engaging with Haruka, he builds a deep friendship with her and supports her in her ambitions as an otaku. His family consists of his parents, who are never there, and his older sister Ruko, who is very busy and has to leave many household chores to him. This also means that most of the time he just wants to be left alone. Before starting a relationship with Haruka, however, he has the unfounded fear of not being able to fit into the image of such a rich family and of being their official friend.

Haruka Nogizaka ( 乃 木 坂 春香 , Nogizaka Haruka )

As a female protagonist, she is the rich protagonist who is highly regarded by the students and tries to hide her strong affection for manga and anime. As a very practiced and celebrated piano player, she lost her reputation once in middle school when her classmates discovered her secret. Since then she has kept a low profile in this regard and uses the school library to still be able to read manga. She has a particular weakness for the manga series Innocent Smile , which is portrayed as famous in the book series , the first edition of which she received from the very young Yūto at a time that both can hardly remember. Already at that time in a dispute with her father about her ambitions as an otaku, she accepted this first edition and has been fixated on this series ever since. In spite of her good academic achievements, she reveals obvious weaknesses in drawing. So she created several Yūto overview maps for joint purchases in Akihabara , which are only recognizable as such with great difficulty. However, she does not know anything about this weakness, since no one has the heart to tell her the truth about it.

Classmates and teachers

Nobunaga Asakura ( 朝 倉 信 長 , Asakura Nobunaga )

He is a childhood friend of Yūto and also attends private school. Despite his strong and open disposition as an otaku , his classmates regard him as a bishon (dt. Beautiful boy ). Because of his hobby he is very familiar with Akihabara and is known almost everywhere there. Because of his enormous purchases, he is also referred to as " Kaiser " in the shops .

Yukari Kamishiro ( 上代 由香 里 , Kamishiro Yukari )

Often referred to as "sexual harassment" by Yūto throughout the story, she is the assistant class teacher within the private school. Always laughing, she enjoys beating insurgent students. As an unmarried woman and music teacher, she spent a long time in Yūto's house. She is 23 years old, but describes herself as “forever young seventeen year olds”. In the anime, she often gets drunk with Yūto's sister Ruko and uses every little opportunity to undress.

Shiina Amamiya ( 天宮 椎 菜 , Amamiya Shiina )

As an exchange student, Shiina attends the same class as Yūto. In a direct comparison, she took second place behind Haruka in the “London Piano Contest”. Similar to Haruka, she has a very positive, friendly and social nature. When she repeatedly bumps into Yūto by chance, she persuades herself that there must be a special reason for it. When she appears, a triangular relationship is established between her, Yūto and Haruka, which seriously upsets the balance in the relationship.

Tōka Tenōji ( 天王寺 冬 華 , Tenōji Tōka )

She is still a young student in the first year of class three. In school she is known as "Princess Blizzard" because of her dominant and arrogant personality. She also comes from a very rich family that competes with the Harukas family. She always strives forwards with her self-declared goal to take over the world. In the anime, she only had a brief cameo .

Mai Asahina ( 朝 比 奈 麻衣 , Asahina Mai )

She is a very quiet classmate of Yūto, but still the vice-president of the Naginatadō club. She therefore makes friends with Shiina very quickly. In the anime, she only had a brief cameo .

Nagai, Takenami and Ogawa ( 永 井 ・ 竹 浪 ・ 小川 )

The three form a group of students in Yūto's class and are usually referenced as san-baka ( Eng . "Three idiots") because they keep having the strangest discussions. It was only shown briefly in the anime.

Mahiro Asakura ( 朝 倉 真 尋 , Asakura Mahiro )

She is the younger sister of Nobunaga Asakura. Her brother describes her as a hopeless person with a bad sense of direction. In turn, she thinks her brother is an idiot and despises his hobbies as an otaku. She doesn't appear in the anime.

Keiji Sendai ( 千代 啓 二 , Sendai Keiji )

Known as the "crazy dog", he is the self-proclaimed "natural enemy of the Akiba-kei ". Still, he is seen by Yūto in both Akihabara and on the Comiket . This character originally comes from the Shaa drawn manga series Kyōhaku Dog's . In the anime, he only had a brief cameo with Setsuna .

Setsuna Yatsusaki ( 八 咲 せ つ な , Yatsusaki Setsuna )

She also attends the same class as Yūto. She is known as the "conscientious dog Hachiko ". Contrary to what her name suggests, she is very clumsy and also visits Akihabara and the Comiket, although like Keiji she belongs to the "Kyōhaku Dog's".

family members

Ruko Ayase ( 綾 瀬 ル コ , Ayase Ruko )

She is the older sister of Yūto and works as a private secretary to a company owner. Although she is a very skilled karate student and tries hard at work, at home she repeatedly drunkens and gets so drunk that she is no longer able to do any housework. These then stick to Yūto. In general, she is characterized by a rough, bestial tone. In addition, she loves to handle weapons and carries a sword that she calls "Ruri Dokuro" ( Eng . Lapis Lazuli - Skull ) around with her. Despite her otherwise brutal manner, she gets along well with both Yukari and Haruka, which Yūto finds very unusual with regard to Haruka.

Mika Nogizaka ( 乃 木 坂 美 夏 , Nogizaka Mika )

As the younger sister of Haruka, she attends middle school in her second year. In addition to various hobbies, such as playing the violin or squash , her favorite pastime is spying on her sister and Yūto. Her personality is the complete counterpart to her naive and inexperienced sister Haruka. She enjoys the presence of Yūto, whom she calls Onii-san (Eng. "Older brother") and tries again and again to intervene in the relationship between Haruka and Yūto, mostly annoying the two.

Gentō Nogizaka ( 乃 木 坂 玄 冬 , Nogizaka Gentō )

Gentō is the father of Haruka and Mika, who took the last name of his wife Akiho's family. His appearance corresponds to that of a member of the yakuza . Nevertheless, he loves his daughters more than anything and wants to keep them from spending too much time with Yūto. So, especially at the beginning of the plot, he stood between Yūto, his daughter and her predilection for anime and manga with his intervention troop called Hell Hounds .

Akiho Nogizaka ( 乃 木 坂 秋 穂 , Nogizaka Akiho )

Akiho is the mother of Haruka and Mika. Despite her dual birth, she is portrayed as youthful and beautiful. So she was initially mistaken for Haruka's older sister or cousin by Yūto. As the head of a cooking school, she has a very calm and intellectual personality, but is able to suppress her husband. Yūto and Haruka describe it as the “ultimate weapon from the house of Nogizaka”. In contrast to Gentō, she thinks positively about the developments between Haruka and Yūto. But she also enjoys spying on the two like Mika. Nevertheless, she is very strict when it comes to Haruka fulfilling her academic achievements.

Ōki Nogizaka ( 乃 木 坂 王季 , Nogizaka Ōki )

He is the maternal grandfather of Haruka and Mika. He is a very kind-hearted old man with a very easy-going personality. Although he has resigned from his position as chairman of the Nogizaka Organization, he still has a strong influence on the economy and politics. As a so-called shadow warrior, he bears the name Heizō Sebastian Sakurazaka and is Hazuki's grandfather.

Nogizakas maid

Hazuki Sakurazaka ( 桜 坂 葉 月 , Sakurazaka Hazuki )

As the chief maid of the Nogizakas, she is supposed to look after Haruka and Mika. In particular, she takes care of Haruka and behaves towards her like an older sister. She is usually very calm and doesn't twist a mine. Still, her collar sometimes bursts and she makes bombastic remarks. She secretly adores cute things and owns a collection of plush toys . Despite this soft core, it keeps appearing out of nowhere and carries a chainsaw with it as a universal tool.

Nanami Nanashiro ( 七 城 那 波 , Nanashiro Nanami )

As a maid with the third highest rank, she is supposed to support Hazuki in her work and mostly takes care of Mika. Mostly on behalf of Mika, she also spies on Yūto and Haruka. She very often wears sunglasses and, similar to Hazuki, often appears out of nowhere, but holds a huge hammer in her hands. Despite her friendly manner and frequent smiles, she has a malicious tongue. Your driving style as a chauffeur is described as grueling, but is always the last resort when it comes to showing up somewhere on time.
