Gert "Zimmi" Zimmermann (born February 9, 1951 in Dresden ; † June 16, 2020 there ) was a German sports journalist . For many years he worked as a sports reporter and sports director for MDR 1 Radio Sachsen .

Life

Inspired by Heinz Florian Oertel , Zimmermann completed a traineeship at Sender Dresden in the late 1960s . He initially gave up his career desire to become a sports reporter for radio because he did not want to become a member of the SED . As a result, he worked as a waiter at the Interhotel Newa in Dresden, before he began to work as a record entertainer and later to report on Dynamo Dresden for Die Union . From 1988 to 1991 he was the stadium announcer for the Dresden soccer club. He described himself as a fan of Dynamo Dresden. The Ministry of State Security had Zimmermann spied on by a total of three dozen unofficial employees .

After the fall of the Berlin Wall and the political change , he became a sports reporter in 1992 and later also head of sports at MDR 1 Radio Sachsen . For the radio station he mainly reported on games of the Saxon football clubs, but also on the European Football Championship in 1992 , the Football World Cup in 1994 and the Winter Olympics in Turin in 2006 and in Vancouver in 2010 . In addition, he established the YouTube format "Zimmis Grätsche", a communication format between sports professionals and amateurs.

Zimmermann was married. He died of cancer on June 16, 2020 at the age of 69.
