Gerta Overbeck

Gerta Overbeck (born January 16, 1898 in Dortmund , † March 2, 1977 in Lünen ) was a German painter and representative of the New Objectivity .

biography

Gerta Overbeck - a daughter of Julius Overbeck and his wife Hedwig Overbeck, b. Schmieding - began training as a drawing teacher in Düsseldorf in 1915 . From 1919 to 1922 she attended the Hanover School of Applied Arts . From 1922 to 1931 she worked as a drawing teacher at various grammar schools in Dortmund. During this time Gerta Overbeck had been the partner of the painter Ernst Thoms from 1926 , whom she also portrayed.

In Dortmund, Gerta Overbeck took part in the 5th Great Westphalian Art Exhibition in 1931. In 1931 she moved to Hanover and worked as a freelance painter and published articles on art theory in the magazine “ Der Wachsbogen ”. She was in contact with the artists Hans Mertens , Karl Rüter , Grethe Jürgens and met the writer Gustav Schenk , who would later become her husband. In May 1932, 23 of her works were shown in the exhibition “The New Objectivity in Hanover”. Politically, Gerta Overbeck was close to the Communist Party and was a member of it for a short time.

Their daughter Frauke was born on January 18, 1937. On May 18, 1937, she married Gustav Schenk, the father of her child. The marriage was divorced on March 15, 1940. In 1938 she returned to Cappenberg near Lünen with her daughter . She lived there in isolation and in economically modest circumstances. From 1958 to 1961 she took painting courses again at the arts and crafts school in Braunschweig. She is buried in Cappenberg in the forest cemetery. Very close to the cemetery and in the neighboring town of Lünen in the district of Wethmar , a street was named after her.

Her closer circle of friends included Gertrud Heinersdorff, the widow of the Berlin glass painter Gottfried Heinersdorff , and Anna Endell, the second wife of the designer August Endell . In 1976 her first solo exhibition took place in Hamburg . Gerta Overbeck is an outstanding representative of New Objectivity painting . Some of her pictures were rediscovered and put on the art market.
