The original parish of Graba, which existed before the city of Saalfeld was founded , had a chapel or even a church consecrated to St. Gertrude and is today the ecclesiastical center of the village of Graba, which was incorporated into the Saalfeld area in 1922.

The former church consisted of a choir and transept with a three-aisled Romanesque nave .

1477–1479 the new tower with a pointed dome was built. The late Gothic choir was built between 1510 and 1520. Its interior is richly decorated and has a painted star vault. The baptismal font is in the center of the room, the nave has been standing since 1778.

The ceiling paintings are lined with stucco frames and represent a concert of angels , which is meant for biblical people. There is also a religious painting on the triumphal arch . The church is equipped with two-zone galleries with a royal box.

The pulpit basket with sound cover is from 1870. The organ dates from 1778, but only the organ prospectus and the case remain. The current work in the old case was built in 1927 by C. Voigt & Sohn, Halberstadt, but its sound was changed (neo-baroque). The seven-meter-high winged altar in the choir dates from 1520.
