Gervase de Peyer

Gervase Alan de Peyer (born April 11, 1926 in London - † February 4, 2017 ) was a British clarinetist and conductor .

Life

Gervase de Peyer studied at the Bedales School . There he won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music , where he studied clarinet with Frederick Thurston and piano with Arthur Alexander . Towards the end of World War II, he served in the Royal Marines Band Service . After the war he returned to the Royal College of Music and two years later began studying with Louis Cahuzac in Paris .

In 1950 he was one of the musicians who founded the Melos Ensemble , with which he played until 1974. He directed the ensemble's recording program with EMI from 1963 to 1973.

Josef Krips won him in 1956 as principal clarinetist for the London Symphony Orchestra . He played with the LSO until 1973. He conducted the English Chamber Orchestra , the London Symphony Orchestra, the Melos Sinfonia and the London Symphony Orchestra Wind Ensemble . In 1959 he began teaching at the Royal Academy of Music .

He lived in the USA since the 1970s. He was a founding member of The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in New York in 1969 and played with the ensemble for 20 years.

Gervase de Peyer gave the world premiere of clarinet concertos by the composers Arnold Cooke , Sebastian Forbes , Alun Hoddinott , Joseph Horovitz , Thea Musgrave , Elizabeth Maconchy , William Mathias and Edwin Roxburgh . In 1987 he played the world premiere of the Sonata for Clarinet Solo by Miklós Rózsa . He was a soloist in the concerts of Aaron Copland and Paul Hindemith under the direction of the composers.
