The Society for Social Progress e. V. is a German association based in Cologne . This emerged from the Society for Social Reform . This association, founded in 1901, was one of the most important and influential social reform organizations during the German Empire and the Weimar Republic. Today's society sees itself as a forum for discussion in the field of social policy under the principles of openness, independence and charitable status. Subjects are all areas of social policy in the context of social change: labor market, social security systems, and, more recently, European integration. The society consists of a diverse group of members, u. a. from BDA, DGB, associations of voluntary welfare, federal states, ministries, social security agencies, companies and personal members. The society holds public conferences and runs working groups for its members. The company is based in Cologne, and the office is located on the Landau campus of the University of Koblenz-Landau.

history

The origin lies in the time of Bismarck and in the union of social reformers around the Prussian trade minister Hans Freiherr von Berlepsch, who resigned in 1896 . To publish their ideas, this group took over the journal “ Soziale Praxis ” in 1897 . At the center of the socio-political intentions of the social reformers at that time were the protection of workers and workers' rights. In 1900 the " International Association for Statutory Workers Protection " was founded in Paris (among others by von Berlepsch, Gustav Schmoller and Werner Sombart ), which set up an "International Labor Office" in Basel , which later became the " International Labor Organization " (ILO) in Geneva emerged. The German section of the International Association, founded in May 1899, called for the establishment of a “Society for Social Reform” in December 1900, which was then considered the German section of the Association.

The founding meeting took place on January 7, 1901 in Berlin . Ernst Francke became general secretary . He was followed in 1919 by Ludwig Heyde , who was later also editor of the social practice. In the Weimar Republic in particular, the Society for Social Reform became a platform for socio-political interest groups, especially through membership of employers' associations and the trade unions.

After the transfer of power to the National Socialists, the actual society dissolved in 1933, but the “Office for Social Policy” and the publication of the magazine “Social Practice” continued until 1943. Since 1936 Ludwig Preller worked as editor of this magazine, which made the first attempts as early as 1946 to revive the "Office for Social Policy" and above all the magazine "Soziale Praxis". On January 22nd, 1949, the “Society for Social Progress e. V. ”was founded as the successor to the Society for Social Reform and Ludwig Preller was elected its chairman. A first general meeting took place in 1951. A key characteristic of society - which has not changed to this day - was even then that all major socio-political interest groups, but above all the trade unions and employers' associations, found a forum in it.
