The striped Mormon tulip ( Calochortus macrocarpus ) is a species of the genus Mormon tulips ( Calochortus ) in the lily family (Liliaceae).

features

The striped Mormon tulip is an autumn to spring green, perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 20 to 50 centimeters. This geophyte forms onions as persistent organs. Brood bulbs can be found at the base of the stem. The basal leaves are weathered during flowering.

The hermaphrodite flower is radial symmetry and threefold. Of the two by three 4 to 6 centimeters large bracts , the inner ones are purple and have a green central stripe on the underside. The nectar glands are triangular-arrow-shaped. The capsule fruit is upright.

The flowering time is in August, sometimes already in July.

Occurrence

The striped Mormon tulip occurs from northeast California and northern Nevada to southern British Columbia and Montana in Artemisia bushes and in yellow pine forests on volcanic floors at altitudes of 300 to 2700 meters.

Systematics

One can distinguish between two varieties:

  • Calochortus macrocarpus var. Macrocarpus : It occurs from western Canada to the western United States.
  • Calochortus macrocarpus var. Maculosus (A.Nelson & JFMacbr.) A.Nelson & JFMacbr. : It occurs from southeast Washington to western Idaho.
