Get Duked! (Originally Boyz In The Wood ) is a black comedy by Ninian Doff , which premiered on March 8, 2019 at the South by Southwest Film Festival . The film was released on Prime Video on August 28, 2020. The satirical coming-of-age story takes place in the Scottish Highlands.

action

Ian, Dean, Duncan and a wannabe rapper who calls himself "DJ Beetroot", four teenagers from town, say goodbye to their sponsor, Mr. Carlyle, and head out on something called "The Duke of Edinburgh Challenge". Here they have to navigate in the Scottish Highlands from point A to point B and should reach a campsite before dark where they want to meet Mr. Carlyle.

Actually, the whole thing is intended as a kind of team building exercise, but Ian really wants to win, which is why he has developed a plan for the challenge and also has a checklist with him. The problem here is that they are not made to survive in the wild and cannot read maps. Rather, they are interested in their smartphones. The second problem is that there is a maniac who calls himself The Duke who thinks it is time to eliminate the weak in the new generation of teenagers. In his eerie mask he hunts the young men.

Halfway through, in the middle of nowhere, they learn that local rabbits feed on a plant that leaves its mark on their feces, making them a hallucinogen. Drunk, they make their way through the wilderness, only to appear on the Scottish coast two days later.

production

Directed by Ninian Doff , who also wrote the script. After a few short films and music videos (including We've Got to Try for The Chemical Brothers ), this is Doff's directorial debut in a feature film.

Viraj Juneja , Rian Gordon , Lewis Gribben and Samuel Bottomley play the roles of the teenagers DJ Beatroot, Dean, Duncan and Ian who embark on “The Duke of Edinburgh Challenge” . Eddie Izzard plays the duke who chases them.

The shooting took place in Scotland. Patrick Meller acted as cameraman . He used an Arri Alexa Mini Cooke in his work. Meller and Doff wanted to emphasize the Scottish landscape. The images should not only look epic, but also help to emphasize the isolation in a hostile environment in which the four boys find themselves during the hunt.

The film premiered on March 8, 2019 at the South by Southwest Film Festival . It opened the Edinburgh International Film Festival on June 19, 2019 and was shown here for the first time in the UK. In December 2019, Amazon Studios acquired the rights to the film. It was released on Prime Video on August 28, 2020. In the US, the film is also called Get Duked! shown.

The Hollywood Reporter's John DeFore classifies it as an action comedy. Rob Hunter of Film School Rejects describes the film as a cross between Hot Fuzz and Attack the Block .

So far, the film has won over 91 percent of all Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 7.6 out of a possible 10 points.

Rafael Motamayoron of Dread Central notes that Ninian Doff also made use of his musical background by providing the film with LSD dream images that delight both the hillbillies and the audience. Wherever the film goes, it is influenced by music, with British hip-hop being heard all the time and always serving history.

John DeFore of The Hollywood Reporter writes that the moment the youngsters roam the Highlands intoxicated by the effects of rabbit droppings, the film accelerates.
