The Geumgang ( 금강 ) is the third longest river in South Korea with its 401 km .
Name meaning
Geumgang translates as “ silk flow ”, referring to its evenly gentle flow.
geography
The river has its source as Tteunbongsaem in the village of Subun-ri and east of the 875 m high Sunmusan , in the Jangsu -gun district of Jeollabuk-do province . On its way north, the river is dammed 7 km northeast of Jinan- eup in the Yongdam reservoir. Further north, west of Daejeon , the Daecheong Dam is another damming of the Geumgang. Then the river flows further west and makes a sharp right-angled bend to the south at Gongju, and then flows into the Yellow Sea via Beyeo after about 50 km at Gunsan .
In the upper reaches of the river it crosses the 1594 m high Deogyusan Mountains, followed by the Baegunsan Mountains, which are 1279 m high. The middle and lower part of the river crosses rather flat landscapes.
The Geumgang drains an area of 9885 km 2
use
The river supplied large parts of the former Honam ( Jeolla-do ) and was important for the water supply of the Kingdom of Baekje , as the Geumgang flowed through two main sites that the kingdom had one after the other. The river was also used to transport goods to Japan at that time , bringing the culture of the developed Baekje to the Japanese islands.
Today the river is used not only for drinking water supply and for supplying agriculture with water. Two large hydropower plants produce electricity for the entire region.
