The yellow lichen bear ( Eilema complana ) is a butterfly ( moth ) from the subfamily of the bear moth (Arctiinae). Other more or less well-known German names are the yellow-edged lichen bear, the common lichen bear, the bush heather lichen bear and the poplar lichen bear.

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 28 to 35 millimeters. The front wings are silver gray with a yellow front and outer edge, the rear wings yellowish. In contrast to the gray-bodied lichen bear ( Eilema lurideola ), the yellow front edge stripe runs out into the wing tip in a constant width, and the species also has a continuously yellow abdomen and yellow legs. In the resting position, the wings are rolled around the body, which gives the butterflies a certain resemblance to pieces of branch or broken off stalk sections. This resting position, the so-called " rolling wing type", is an important characteristic compared to the Eilema species with wings laid flat over the back ("flat wing type"), to which Eilema lurideola also belongs.

The caterpillars are brown-black to black and have two rows of orange-colored spots on their backs, which are accompanied by white dots. They have brown bristles.

Occurrence

The species is found throughout Europe but is absent in the far north and north of Great Britain . It occurs both on the plains and in low mountain ranges, with forest clearings , heather and other warm areas with many bushes being preferred. The yellow lichen bear is one of the most common representatives of the genus Eilema.

Flight and caterpillar times

The yellow lichen bear flies in one generation from June to early September. The caterpillars are usually found in May immediately after wintering, when they are almost adult. The puppet rest takes about three to four weeks.

Way of life

The moths are nocturnal and rest on grass or bushes during the day. They suck on flowers, e.g. B. of linden , thistle and scabiosa .

The caterpillars live on oaks and beeches overgrown with lichen , their fallen leaves and heather . But they also occur on fruit trees and poplars . Lichen and moss-grown dry stone walls in vineyards, shell limestone rocks , granite and gneiss chunks on road embankments or in the form of road markers are also populated. The caterpillars feed on stone, tree and wood lichen.
