Gheorghe Magheru

Gheorghe Magheru (born April 8, 1802 ( also 1804 ) in Bârzeiu de Gilort , Gorj district , † May 23, 1880 in Bucharest ) was a Romanian freedom fighter , general and politician .

Life

The son of Ion and Bălașa Magheru was born in Bârzeiu de Gilort. Magheru led Pandur units from Tudor Vladimirescu in 1821 . In 1848 he emigrated to Transylvania and Trieste and later to Vienna . During his nine years in exile he campaigned for the independence of Romania. After the outbreak of the Crimean War , he went to Istanbul in 1854 to raise a Romanian troop to fight against the Tsarist Empire. In 1857 he moved into the ad hoc assembly and later in the Romanian parliament as a deputy for the Gorj district. Gheorghe Magheru died in 1880.

The Gheorghe Magheru Boulevard in Bucharest was named after him, and a postage stamp from the Poşta Română was dedicated to him.
