Dursley is a municipality in the county of Gloucestershire in England . The place is at the foot of the northeast flank of Stinchcombe Hill , which belongs to the range of hills of the Cotswolds , about 6 km southeast of the River Severn . Dursley shares many facilities with the neighboring community of Cam (combined population approx. 12,000).

Dursley is on the edge of the Cotswolds, which at this point slopes down towards the Severn Vale and the River Severn. The place is in a rural setting on the River Cam . The long distance Cotswold Way footpath passes through Dursley.

history

The Dursley area has been inhabited since the Neolithic . In Uley Bury in the nearby village of Uley, there are remains of an Iron Age fort that dates back to around 300 BC. Dated. Roman ruins can be found in the neighboring towns of Frocester , Woodchester and Calcot Manor.

In 1153 Roger de Berkley built a castle in Dursley, which has not been preserved. The Church of St. James the Great originally dates from the 13th century, but the building that can be seen today was mainly built in the 14th and 15th centuries. The original church tower collapsed when the bell rang in January 1699, which resulted in several deaths. The current tower dates from 1709 and was built by Thomas Sumsion .

Dursley Market House

Dursley had been an important market town since the 18th century, attracting farmers and traders from the wider area. The columned market house with a statue of Queen Anne dates from 1738.

In 1856 Dursley was connected to the rail network via the Dursley and Midland Junction Railway . The station was on a branch line of the Bristol - Gloucester railway line . This connection was closed in 1968. In 1994 a new train station was opened at the site of the former junction.

Dursley achieved borough status in 1471 , but lost it again in 1886. From 1886 to 1974 it was the center of the Dursley Rural District constituency . In 1974 Dursley was incorporated into the Stroud constituency.
