Ghislaine Dupont ([ / ʒislɛn dypõ / ]; born January 13, 1956 ; † November 2, 2013 in Mali ) was a French journalist who specialized in African topics. She was kidnapped and murdered in 2013.

Life

As a child she lived in Africa for a few years. After graduating from university, she studied at the École supérieure de journalisme de Paris . She started her career at Ouest-France and Témoignage Chrétien . She then worked for free radio stations including Gilda La Radiopolitaine in Paris and for Radio France Belfort . In 1986 she worked for Radio France Internationale (RFI) for the first time and then moved to the private Radio Méditerranée Internationale in Tangier , Morocco .

Since her final return to Radio France Internationale in 1990, Ghislaine Dupont has only researched African problems: she reported on UNITA in Angola , in Sierra Leone in the RUF areas , on Djibouti , Ethiopia and the Eritrea conflict, Rwanda , Sudan , Algeria and Ivory Coast , where she discovered the existence of mass graves in Abidjan .

From 1997 to 2007 she devoted herself to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (RDC). In 2003 she was involved in setting up Radio Okapi in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Frequency of Peace was created on the initiative of the Swiss Hirondelle Foundation, a non-governmental organization (NGO), to actively support the media in crisis situations, with the support of the United Nations Mission for Stabilization in the Democratic Republic of the Congo ( MONUC ). She trained young journalists and Radio Okapi is now considered a serious medium.

In 2006, the Kabila government in Kinshasa ousted her between the first and second round of the presidential election .

Ghislaine Dupont was known as a first-class investigator for editorial rigor and finesse and very good political analysis. She became an editorial consultant at RFI in July 2013.

Ghislaine Dupont was kidnapped by unknown perpetrators on November 2, 2013, not far from Kidal in northeast Mali, together with her companion, the technician Claude Verlon. On November 6, 2013, the terrorist organization al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb confessed to the murder of RFI employees.

Honor

Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta , President of the Republic of Mali, awarded Ghislaine Dupont with the Order of Mali.
