Giacomo Palearo

Giovan Giacomo Palearo (or Paleari), called El Fratín, (* 1520 in Morcote , Ticino , Switzerland ; † May 31, 1586 in Pamplona , Spain ) was an architect and military engineer of the 16th century. He was the son of Condottiere Giovan Francesco de Palearo (Paleari) and the brother of Giorgio and Bernardino Paleari.

Palearo, who was initially in the service of France, took part in the fortification of the city of Milan in 1560 and then worked on the island of Corsica and Malta as well as in La Goulette in Tunisia . In 1573 he was appointed captain of infantry by King Philip II of Spain . He designed u. a. the citadel of Pamplona (Spain, from 1571), the bastion of Santa Llúcia in the city of Ibiza (1575), the stronghold of Sant Pere in Palma (1575) and, under the Duke of Alba, the fortification of the Forte de São Julião da Barra, built from 1580 in Lisbon ( Portugal ). He was also active in Menorca (planning the fortifications of Ciutadella ) and Sardinia , in North Africa and Gibraltar .

Palearo will u. a. mentioned in the novel Don Quixote de la Mancha by Miguel de Cervantes .
