La Goulette ( French ; Italian La Goletta , Arabic حلق الوادي, DMG Ḥalq al-Wādī ) is a city in Tunisia that includes part of the port facilities of Tunis . La Goulette is 10 km from the capital Tunis and connected to it by a dam through the Tunis lagoon . The city was founded after the French occupied Tunisia in 1881. Until the country gained independence in 1956, mainly Europeans, especially Italians, lived here. 45,711 inhabitants live in the city (as of 2014).
The fortress was in 1535 after the conquest of Tunis by Charles V built. The fortress and the city of Tunis were recaptured by the Ottomans in 1574 .
