"Allegory of Fame" (excerpt)

Giacomo del Pò (born December 29, 1654 in Rome , † November 16, 1726 in Naples ) was an Italian painter of the late Baroque .

Life

Del Pò was initially a student of his father, the painter and engraver Pietro del Pò . Then he went to Nicolas Poussin's workshop in Rome. At the age of twenty he became a member of the Accademia di San Luca on June 17, 1674 .

From 1683 he is recorded in Naples, where he worked together with the painter Francesco di Maria (1623–1690) on frescoes in aristocratic palaces. He also worked as a set designer for the Teatro di San Bartolommeo.

Initially committed to the style of Poussin, he switched to the Neapolitan Baroque in Naples, which was founded by Luca Giordano and continued by his student Francesco Solimena .

In 1720, two years after he had taken up residence in Vienna, Prince Eugene of Savoy commissioned del Pò with three large ceiling paintings for the upper Belvedere .

His sister Teresa del Pò worked as a miniaturist, the stepbrother Andrea del Pò is also said to have been a painter. His students were Gaetano Martoriello , Antonio Massaro and Luigi Lanzi.
