biography

He was born the son of Count Federico Mazzuchelli and Margherita Muzzi. Due to the poor health in early childhood, he first studied with a private teacher. He continued his studies in Bologna as a student of Francesco Saverio Quadrio and later in Padua as a student of Domenico Lazzarini, where he graduated in 1728. In the same year he married Barbara Chizzoli, an heiress whose dowry enabled him to devote himself to the study of history. Mazzucchelli's father bought Moggi's family house from the 16th century between Brescia and Lake Garda in 1722 and added the central building and the west wing some time later. As noted on the plaque between the central door frame of the vestibule and the tympanum, Giammaria finished construction in 1753. He died twelve days after the death of his wife.

Literary career

Historical and critical accounts of the life, inventions and writings of Archimedes of Syracuse. , 1737

He made his debut with numerous learned and accurate biographies of ancient and modern authors (e.g. Archimedes , Pietro Aretino , Lodovico Adimari , Luigi Alamanni , Matteo and Filippo Villani ). On the basis of this experience, he developed the extensive plan to collect the biographies of all Italian writers and the accounts of their works from the earliest times. He benefited from being the curator of the Biblioteca Queriniana , which was donated by Cardinal Angelo Maria Quirini in Brescia , and from his extensive correspondence with Italian and European scholars. He therefore began to compile a large encyclopedia of Italian writers, but the work remained unfinished because of the untimely death of the author

With this scientific work, Mazzuchelli paved the way for the history of Italian literature , as Girolamo Tiraboschi recognized in the introduction of his major work and later historians. Much of the material that Mazzuchelli could not use is still in manuscript in the Vatican Apostolic Library ; there is also a copy in the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Roma .
