Life

Bevilacqua came from a humble background, but his parents were educated and had extensive artistic knowledge. Bevilacqua studied with Ludovico Gallina from 1786 , enrolled in Venice's Accademia in 1788 , which he attended until 1791, and in which he received his first award in the same year. At the Accademia he met Francesco Maggiotto , a student of Giovanni Battista Piazzetta , where he continued his studies. Already at this time he was known as a painter and in 1795 was appointed conservatore dei pubblici quadri . From now on he concentrated on working on frescoes . In 1797 he was aggregated at the Collegio degli Accademici and taught from 1801 to 1804. In 1804 he was replaced by Teodoro Matteini , who obtained the license to teach painting at the Accademia.

Admired at a young age by Duke Ferdinand of Parma as the winner of a competition at the Accademia di Parma , he nevertheless remained more associated with the Accademia di Venezia , where he taught at the time.

When Napoleon , before whose entry the Republic of Venice dissolved itself in 1797, commissioned frescoes for the procuraties , Bevilacqua took over this task. He received a similar assignment for the Villa Pisani in Stra . He was hired by numerous private and ecclesiastical clients, so that he left a total of around 900 works. From 1828 he was called pubblico restauratore , so he was responsible for the state - Venice was now Austrian - as a kind of chief restorer. In this position he worked in numerous churches in Venice, but also in the Doge's Palace and the Biblioteca Marciana .

But now a period of failure followed. In 1836 he applied in vain for the post of Conservatore of the Gallerie dell'Accademia ; likewise unsuccessful in 1845 was his application for the position of director of the Museo Correr . In 1847 he asked for employment as a pubblico restauratore and in 1848 he asked for tax relief.

His most important works are the frescoes in the Napoleonic procuraties around St. Mark's Square from 1810, 1812 and 1814, then his works in various palazzi, such as the Palazzo Persico e Moro-Lin (1806), Barbaro e Nani (1811) or Revedin (1814). In the Austrian period from 1815 onwards, his most important assignment was to work for the Palazzo reale in 1840. In Stra, he had worked in the Villa Pisani in 1810 , at the Casa Revedin in Treviso from 1813–1814, and in 1818 at the Paduan Palazzo Zabarella . In 1820 he worked in Trieste in the Palazzo della Borsa Vecchia, more precisely on the Carro di Nettuno , on Neptune's chariot in the central drawing room. He also worked at numerous churches, such as in 1793 in San Iacopo in Chioggia (1793), then at the Chiesa dei Filippini the following year. In 1804 he worked in Schiavonia ( Monselice ), then in 1824 at the church in Mira , as in 1818 in Padua on the Volta Barozzo, at the cathedral of Latisana in 1823, in 1834 in Martellago at the local parish church, and in 1842 finally at the parish church of Legnaro .

In 1848 he wrote a kind of autobiography that is kept in the Museo Correr, where a list of his works is also located.
